Veteran soldiers remembered

A wreath-laying ceremony has been held at the Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) villages throughout the country in commemoration of retired soldiers who died in line of duty during the First World War

The day is observed on 11 November every year to recall the end of hostilities of World War I in 1918 where hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

In Tamale, the Northern Regional Minister Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna laid a wreath on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, followed by the Garrison Commander who laid his on behalf of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Gulkpegu Naa also laid one on behalf of the Chiefs and traditional authorities in the region while representatives of the Veterans Association of Ghana-Northern Region Chapter laid theirs in remembrance of demised colleagues.

The Minister underscored the importance of the retired soldiers in national development stating that government recognizes the role they play in bringing about peace in the country.

“Government will continue to support you and your families. This is the time much support needs to be extended to you in order to keep you strong and seek your counsel each time the need arises”, he revealed.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) Abdul-Hanan Gundadow who later interacted with the veterans in their village promised to liaise with some decentralized departments to tap into the experience of the veterans he noted have contributed their quota to the development of country.
