Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has inspected ongoing street naming and house numbering exercise in the Wa Municipality as part of his working visit to the Upper West Region.
The project, which was initiated by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in collaboration with the Wa Municipal Assembly, was to ensure proper street coding and house identification.
Vice President Amissah-Arthur speaking to the media during the inspection described the street naming exercise as impressive.
He said it was important the streets were named after people who have made significant contribution towards the development of the Region.
He said the project had started on a good note and expressed the hope that they would conclude with the numbering of the houses in the Municipality.
Vice President Amissah-Arthur stated that if the house numbering exercise was done successfully it could even make it possible for the Postal Service to deliver letters to people in their house as was done in some of the neighboring countries.
Mr Julius Debrah, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, explained that the street naming and house numbering exercise is to Google map the area so that officials at the Municipal Assembly could tell where a person’s house was located.
He said the objective for the exercise was to ensure that all streets and houses in the municipality are numbered.
He said once the Assembly has all the data of the streets and houses in the area, it would also help them to enhance their revenue mobilization.
Mr Issahaku Nuhu Putiha, Wa Municipal Chief Executive, explained that the street naming and house numbering exercise was still ongoing but what was left was to translate the data collected from exercise into satellite images.
