Sunyani,(Brong Ahafo) 6 Oct.1998 The Vice-President, Professor John Atta Evans Mills, has said that since the basic prerequisite for development is peace and stability, the country should provide the basic needs of its security services to enhance their performances.
“If the country has made significant strides in its developmental efforts and foreign investors are trooping in to invest, then it is because of the stable political and peaceful atmosphere we have enjoyed for some time now.”
Prof. Mills was addressing members of the security services at the Liberation Barracks at Sunyani as part of his four-day working visit to the Brong Ahafo region.
He said the government has, therefore, taken steps to renovate and construct new buildings for the security services to provide them with enough accommodation to ensure their comfort.
“It is not true that those at the top are insensitive to the plight of the security services, if we cannot be sensitive to those, who protect us then we have no business to stay in government.”
He commended the security services in the region for the mature manner they have so far handled disputes in places like Fiapre, Wenchi and Banda-Ahenkro.
On the Justice Archer’s Report on the Police Service, Prof. Mills, who is also the chairman of the police council, said a number of issues are being addressed even before government issues a white paper on it.
He said some promotions within the service have been approved. Answering a question on the need for an insurance scheme for personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Prof. Mills noted that the government has to adopt a holistic approach to ensure that all categories of workers who are prone to risk are insured.
