VEEP calls for accountability

Accra, Sept. 21, GNA – Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama on Wednesday asked organisations involved in the capital-intensive fight against HIV/AIDS, to keep good records on all their financial transactions to win donor confidence.

He stressed the need for prudent use of funds to keep the donor support flowing. He was interacting with a delegation from the West African Network For Civil Society Organisations (WANASO), Sub-Regional body strengthening response to HIV/AIDS at the Castle, Osu. Alhaji Mahama, who is the Chairman of Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), said accountability was vital at a time when the network was attending a workshop in Accra to among other things package projects and proposals for funding.

He said donor funding for GAC would cease at the end of the year and called on the network to step in to keep the programme vibrant. The Vice President expressed satisfaction that the Accra workshop would among other things include capacity building, which, he said, was crucial to the fight against the pandemic.

Professor Sakyi Awuku Amoah, Director General of GAC, said the workshop was necessary since national response to HIV/AIDS depended on stakeholders.

He said the active role of Community Based Organisations Ghana had led to a breakthrough in the fight against the pandemic. Mr Sam Anyimadu Amaning, Chairperson of WANASO, said the network which started in 1991, had made Ghana part of the global response against AIDS.

He said the workshop would help to build a pool of 17 trained persons to facilitate the campaign against AIDS Ms Fatimata Sy, Director of Action for West Africa, that is supporting the fight against HIV/AIDS in the Sub-Region, said the USAID sponsored five-year programme would end in 2008. 21 Sept.05
