Van Vicker Commends Mahama as Cedi Appreciates Against Dollar

Ghanaian actor Van Vicker has publicly commended former President John Dramani Mahama for the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, describing the development as a noteworthy achievement for the country.

In a Facebook post shared on Tuesday, May 28, 2025, the actor highlighted the improvement in the local currency’s performance against the US dollar, which has seen a significant recovery from approximately GH¢17 to around GH¢11 to $1 in recent months.

“Mr. President, I must congratulate you on the strengthening of the Ghana cedis on the world market. Ayekoo,” he wrote, referring directly to the former president.

The actor acknowledged the various theories circulating in public discourse regarding the reasons behind the cedi’s improved performance, but maintained that the results speak for themselves. “The true reason could be a consolidation of two or more of–whatever–theories, but be that as it may, the fact remains that the Ghana cedis is approximately GH¢11 to $1 today,” he stated.

Van Vicker also used the opportunity to urge Ghanaians, especially those in the diaspora, to recognise and appreciate the development instead of downplaying it. He warned against what he described as a “narcissistic” attitude toward progress made under certain leadership.

“This is not a political statement. It is an acknowledgement of a good job done so far,” he said. “Call a spade a spade. Give credit to whom credit is due.”

While some analysts and social media users have expressed scepticism about the cedi’s sustainability at its current level, the actor appeared more optimistic. He described the present exchange rate as “remarkable” and expressed confidence that the positive trend could be maintained with the right policies and discipline.

“I think the current cedis orbit is remarkable for Ghana as a country and I am optimistic it’s sustainable,” he wrote.

Van Vicker closed his post with a nostalgic reference to the cedi’s strength in 2007, suggesting that a return to such levels would be extraordinary. “Your Excellency JM, if you can take us back to 2007, heerrrh like e go be ‘kerker’,” he added with humour.

His comments have sparked mixed reactions online, with some applauding his boldness in recognising the government’s efforts, while others view his remarks as overly optimistic.

Regardless of the debate, the actor’s post adds a celebrity voice to the broader national conversation around Ghana’s economic performance and currency stability.
