UWCWD is the answer to our garbage problems-Ahafo-Ano North MP

Accra, Jan. 27, GNA – Mr Kwame Owusu Frimpong, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ahafo-Ano North, on Friday said the answer to the garbage problem in the country is the construction of an Underground Waterproof Combustive Waste Dump (UWCWD) in major cities.

These could be cited at any available open space or site near existing refuse collection points.

Mr Frimpong, who made a statement on: “A way forward for safe sanitation and sound clean environment” said disposal and dumping of garbage had become a cyclic and inter-twined problem, which needs strong, frantic and concerted efforts to break. He said: “The UWCWDs are manholes of suitable, appreciable and different sized walls with burnt bricks with perforated hanging platforms for the bottom, which will allow liquid to drain down from garbage.”

UWCWDs are made waterproof by fixing a movable water cover, which is rust proof and water resistant. Such cover can be opened and closed to receive and burn garbage.

“Garbage or refuse when well managed can serve as organic manure. Toxics and other material like plastics can be removed and used as constructional fillings.”

He said problems facing refuge collection contractors were numerous and included inadequate logistics like vehicles and containers, lacked funds, low public participation, refusal to pay for services and law enforcement support.

The MP said it was common knowledge that acquisition and use of dumping sites were fraught with constant wrangling from interested persons around due to unsavoury odour and infestation of mosquitoes and flies.

“It is for these reasons that dumping site are becoming scarce commodities and even when they are available are situated at considerable distance from the centre of the garbage generation.” He said there was an urgent need to rid the environment of filth and the place for it was in the soil where it could be burnt to ashes. He expressed the hoped that Saturday, January 28, Accra Metropolitan Assembly organised clean-up exercise would be embraced by
