Kumasi, May 23, GNA – A team of Ophthalmologists from the University of Utah Medical School, on Monday began a four-day special eye treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. The team made up of eye surgeons and specialists is expected to treat and perform surgery on 100 cataract and glaucoma patients as well as children with squinted eyes.
They brought along with them surgical supplies and equipment worth 125,000 dollars for their operations.
Welcoming the team, Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare, Chief Executive of the KATH, recalled the strong relationship that existed between the Hospital and the University of Utah Medical School and said this had resulted in the annual visits of the members of the faculties of paediatrics, eye and anaesthesia to the hospital to undertake medical exercises. He expressed the hope that the relationship would be extended to the training and building the capacities of staff of the Hospital to enable them to improve on their performance.
Professor Alan S. Crandall, leader, said the visit would afford the team the opportunity to treat patients who had complicated eye problems.
Dr Seth Yaw Lartey, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the KATH, said the Hospital hoped to work with the team on long-term basis to build the capacities of the staff of the Eye Clinic. 23 May 05
