The University Teachers Association of Ghana, (UTAG) has begun assessing the intake of fresh students across various tertiary institutions in its quest to ensure public universities cut down on student admissions for the 2016/17 academic year.
UTAG has argued that the current lecturer-student ratio places undue stress on lecturers. They want more lecturers to be recruited into the institutions in order to address the falling teaching and learning standards.
Speaking to Class News, President of UTAG Dr Harry Agbanu said the association was expecting a report on the intake of fresh students across the tertiary institutions and would soon consider its next line of action.
“We have called our management to consider scaling the admissions for the 2016/17 academic year because of government’s refusal to allow for the recruitment of the required number of lecturers to handle the courses,” he stated.
“We said we were going to give ourselves two weeks to study the situation after which we’ll know the next line of action.
So what we have done so far is to write to the institutions to provide us with data on their admission, the number of students, the percentage decrease in the admission, the teacher-student ratio and we are having our National Executive meeting in Navrongo in two weeks to look at the data provided by the institutions and then we take it from there.”
