Use vehicle logbook to check speeding – Administrator

Saltpond (C/R), Feb. 2, GNA – The Administrator of the Saltpond Government Hospital, Mr John Abaidoo-Abbam has suggested to the National Road Safety Committee to introduce the use of vehicle log-books for checking speeding on our roads.

Mr Abaidoo-Abbam explained that the time the vehicle leaves a station should be booked in the logbook for checking at vantage points by either the police or members of the Road Safety Committee to determine the speed he drives at.

He said officials of the transport unions at the last destination should also check the hours the driver uses in making the journey to determine whether the speed is within limit or not.

Expressing concern about rampant accidents at the Hospital’s catchment area, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Saltpond, Mr Abaidoo-Abbam noted that because drivers gave information to their colleagues about the presence of the police on the road, they reduced the speed to avoid being identified as driving beyond the speed limit. He said drivers even doubled the speed after passing where the police were to make up for the time they wasted in the encounter with the police.

“Every week the hospital has to attend to road accident victims” he said adding that the situation was not only sapping the energy of the staff but also draining its resources. 02 Feb. 05
