USAG congratulates farmers

Tamale, Nov. 30, GNA – The University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG) has sent a message of congratulation to farmers on the occasion of the 21st National Farmers’ Day, which falls on Friday, saying:

“we appreciate and celebrate the achievement of our illustrious farmers”. This was contained in a press statement issued in Tamale on Thursday and signed by Mr Kweku Tuoho Bombason, General Secretary of USAG.

The Association noted: “In spite of the numerous challenges facing our farmers, they continue to feed the people and contribute significantly to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country”. The USAG called on the government to have a clear policy to absorb agriculture graduates from the country’s universities and colleges to play a key role in the agricultural sector since they have the technical expertise.

It expressed the need for the government to restructure the curricula of the agricultural schools and faculties of the universities and colleges to reflect modern trends and give the sector the needed impetus to grow. The Association appealed to the government to address the obsolete farming practices, low rainfall pattern, high cost of agricultural inputs and the slow pace of the modernisation of agriculture to pave way to boost productivity.
