US volunteers join NSD exercise

The Coordinator for the American Youth Leadership Program (AYLP), Ms Kim Reaman of the University of Wyoming has lauded the National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise introduced by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.

She said, with many hands, the work is lighter and it goes quicker and easier and it’s always fun when people work as a group to accomplish a task.

Ms Reaman was speaking after she and her group of volunteers from the United States and members of 4H-Ghana, a non-governmental organisation based in Koforidua participated in this month’s NSD exercise at Akwadum, a farming community near Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

She called for the establishment of plants to recycle plastic bottles and sachet water rubbers to help reduce the threat to the environment.

Ms Reaman indicated that, good sanitation keeps the country beautiful and clean, makes it an attractive place to live and boost ones health.

She said the focus of AYLP is to learn about their host country and support the training of teenagers through global citizenship skills.

Mr Albert Adjei Mensah, Programmes Director of 4H Ghana said, the exercise has been helpful and given the group a fair idea of the lifestyle and activities.

He called on Ghanaians to emulate the vision of the US and give the necessary exposure to teens to understand the activities of the global world, which would give them the experience and knowledge.

The 25- member US team and their host and friends in Ghana, cleaned the Akwadum market square, roundabout and some principal streets in the community.

In another development, the New Juaben Municipal Assembly, observed this month’s NSA exercise at Jumapo, where they joined the chiefs and people of the community to clean the streets, gutters and market area.
