US to provide more military assistance to Ghana

Accra, July 16, GNA- General Charles F. Wald, Deputy Commander of the US European Command (USEUCOM) on Friday pledged more logistic support by the US Government to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) especially the Ghana Air Force.

He said negotiations were underway to partner Ghana to the State of North Dakota for military co-operation and the provision of C130 Transporter Aircraft to Ghana to airlift troops and their equipment. General Wald on a routine visit to Ghana made the pledge when he paid a courtesy call on President John Agyekum Kufuor at the Castle, Osu. He said two African countries South Africa and Morocco already had partnership with New York and Utah respectively.

He said efforts would be made to establish partnership between Ghana and North Dakota, which had one of the best airforce operations in the US. General Wald advocated for more financial assistance to the five African Regional Response Force to operate efficiently and effectively maintain peace and security on the continent.

He commended ECOWAS for the maintenance of peace and tranquillity within the Sub-Region and urged other African Regional Response Force to emulate the ECOMOG that had been a model for the continent.

President Kufuor commended the US for her assistance to Africa and said African countries had the troops to effectively work with and maintain peace but the problem was with insufficient logistics to operate. “We have the men to work to maintain the peace in the trouble spots but need the equipment to perform”, he said.

President Kufuor said the world was in a transition to a global village and most developing countries needed peace and stability to develop in order that all countries could be together in the global village. The USEUCOM has command over 91 countries in the world including Africa.
