US Regional Environmental Directorate to partner NGOs

Ho, April 21, GNA – The United States Regional Environment Directorate is to collaborate with local non-governmental organizations to tackle environmental issues.

Mr. Geoff Hunt, Director of the Directorate, said this in Ho on Sunday after a thanksgiving service to climax the 42nd anniversary celebrations of the 66 Artillery Regiment (Volta Barracks) in Ho. He said the non-governmental organizations would be given technical and material support to deal with solid waste and also to provide potable drinking water to communities in the region.

Mr. Hunt said Ghana is doing well in solid waste management but a lot still needed to be done.

He said the law on the environment would be looked at and forestation to deal with climatic and economic changes. Public awareness and education would be a major part of the collaboration.

Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Kotia, Commanding Officer of the 66 Artillery Regiment, expressed the preparedness of the Regiment to be part of the forestation programme and said the Regiment had established mango and tick tree plantations in and around the Barracks.
