Tema, Oct 6, GNA – A United States Naval Ship, ELROD FFJ 55, has berthed at the Tema Port on a four-day goodwill visit. The 230 sailors include 25 security personnel who would be having joint training with medical personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces. Ms Sue K. Brown, Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy, visited the vessel when 30 nurses from the 37 Military Hospital were undergoing a basic life support training.
During the two-day training the nurses would be taken through stretcher training, cardiac resuscitation as well as sucking chest fluid.
In an interaction with the media Commander Teresa Sanford, the Commanding Officer of the vessel, said the main purpose of the visit was to train medical personnel in handling casualties and to strengthen the relationship between Ghana and the US.
Lt. Eric Bower, in charge of Air Operations on board the vessel, said the ship was to secure the Gulf of Guinea against drug trafficking, piracy, arms smuggling and other criminal activities. It is also to intercept small crafts involved in criminal activities and that Cape Verde would be their next stop.
