US, French experts in to unravel cause of helicopter crash

Three experts from the United States of America (USA) and some French nationals have arrived in the country to aid in investigations to find out the cause of last Thursday’s helicopter crash offshore Takoradi, boss of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority has said.

The French nationals have already taken possession of the flight data recorder – also known as the black box – to help in investigations, Air Commodore Kwame Mamphey told TV3’s Sandra Amarquaye in an interview on Monday, May 12.

The helicopter – manufactured by French firm Black Cock – plunged into the Gulf of Guinea 20 nautical miles off the coast of Takoradi, resulting in the death of three.

The chopper was on a routine crew shuttle mission to an oil rig in the Jubilee Fields.

Four were rescued injured while one is still missing.

“It will be difficult really saying when the missing person will be found,” observed Air Commodore Mamphey.

“But I believe that we will find him.”

The missing person has been identified as Walter Agorti-Mevor, a Ghanaian Mud Engineer with MI Swaco.

The Ministry of Transport is expected to set up an investigative team this week to look into the crash.
