US Embassy donates books to Du Bois Centre

Accra, May 3, GNA – The U.S. Embassy on Thursday donated 500 African-American books and shelf worth 5,375 dollars to the W.E.B Du Bois Centre Library in Accra.

The donation was part of the Embassy’s Jubilee Year celebration dubbed: “Ghana-US @ 50: Looking Back, Moving Forward.” Ms Anne Johnson, Regional Librarian of the U.S. Embassy, said the books would increase information and library resources available to Ghanaians throughout the country.

She said the books, which included biographies, history, literature as well as the social sciences, would educate Ghanaians about the cultural impact of the African Diaspora.

She said the U.S. Embassy was looking forward to provide an electronic communication library and information based system for their patrons in the country, especially students.

Ms Johnson said the gesture would be extended to other libraries in the country so that Ghanaians would get acquainted with facilities that would be useful to them and enhance their knowledge.

Professor Anne Adams, Director of Du Bois Centre, lauding the effort of the Embassy said since the inception of the library in 2004 it had received tremendous help from the Embassy in restoring the library. She said the library had in its possession books donated from other Americans who normally visited the library.

Prof. Adams said the library was expecting more donations from other organizations and societies in the country to resource the centre.
