Cape Coast, July 9, GNA – The Embassy of the United States (US) has donated assorted books to the Cape Coast slave castle library and expressed the hope that the donation would help bolster the vibrancy of the facility.
Presenting the books, Ms Pamela Bridgewater, the American ambassador, said students of Morgan State University donated some of the books while the rest constituted the Embassy’s “widow’s mite”. The books covered a wide range of subjects such as American history, government, science and technology, and civil rights movements in the US.
Ms Bridgewater, who pledged to donate more books to the library, said the castle always reminded her of the history of the slave trade, which was the basis for the presence of many Africans in the Diaspora today.
The Ambassador urged Ghanaians to take inspiration from Africans in the Diaspora, saying they continued to contribute their quota to the development of their homeland.
Mr Nicholas Ivor, Central and Western Regional Director of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, who received the books, said they would help raise the standards of the library.
