US Ambassador calls on Minister of Information

A three-member delegation from the US Embassy led by Mr Gene Cretz, the Ambassador to Ghana, on Wednesday paid a courtesy call on Mr Mahama Ayariga, Minister of Information in Accra.

Mr Cretz commended Ghana for exhibiting high democratic credentials and peaceful transfer of power in the December 7 elections where President John Dramani Mahama won.

He also congratulated the Minister on his appointment as Minister of information and urged him to deplore social media in information dissemination to the citizenry.

He noted that the relationship between the two countries was excellence and expressed the hope that would be deepened in future.

“My country will be interested in the Ghanaian economy in areas like Health, Energy and trade,” he added.

Mr Mahama in responds said Ghana had benefited from the US support for institutional support that had helped in deepening the country’s democracy.

He also expressed gratitude to all partners for their support in diverse ways to the country over the years.

The Information Minister noted that government was commitment in working with the media to explore ways to engage the citizenry in addressing challenges in electoral process.

He said government believed in free media as entrenched in the 1992 constitution hence its determination to pass the Freedom of Information Act and the Broadcasting Law.

Mr Mahama said his government had also introduced the media development fund, which would be used to equip and build the capacity of media personnel in the discharge of their duties for national development.
