Urology surgery resumes in Sunyani

Sunyani, Aug 7, GNA – Urology surgery at the Sunyani Regional Hospital has resumed after several months’ stoppage following the death in a motor accident of three urologists from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. They died when they were returning to Accra after an outreach programme at the Sunyani Regional Hospital.

They were Professor J.M.K. Quartey, the leader of the team, Dr Isaac Bentsi and Dr Benjamin Osei-Wiafe.

Dr Daniel Asare, Medical Superintendent of the regional hospital, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that Dr. Emmanuel J. Mensah from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital was in charge of urology surgery at the hospital.

Dr Mensah and his team visit the hospital every month and perform 10 surgeries before leaving.

He commended Citi Link, a private airliner, for supporting the programme with free air tickets for Dr. Mensah and his team. Mr Asare expressed concern about the absence of a resident urologist at the hospital, saying the hospital required a permanent urologist.

He said the hospital, which would celebrate its fourth anniversary this year, hoped to carve a niche for itself by providing quality health care service to clients.

“This however can be achieved through improvement in attitude of staff towards clients, frequent training of staff, monitoring and assessment of staff”, he said.

Dr. Asare said plans were underway to bring young energetic diploma and degree holding nurses to the wards. “The hospital will also improve its supervisory work on contractors to ensure that facilities are well maintained as well as securing the hospital against fire and theft,” he said
