Three Regional Executive members of the National Democratic Party (NDP) in the Upper East on Friday resigned their positions and from the party to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The executives, which included Mr James Tenga, General Secretary and spokesperson for the defectors, Mr Emmanuel Kwame Atibila, Chairman and Mr George Solomon, Communications Officer of the party held that their endorsement covered the other executive members who were absent at the meeting because of work schedules.
The executives later handed over the party’s pickup to the Bolgatanga Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit, who refused to take custody of the vehicle and directed them to either take it to the party’s national secretariat or the Regional police directorate.
According to the spokesperson for the NDP defectors, the members of the party in the region have realized that “some of us were misled into joining the NDP. It has become clear to some of us that the NDP was just formed for the purpose of destroying the NDC by the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings”.
He conceded that some of the members in the NDP were disgruntled with the leadership of the NDC in the past and said “it was because we felt abandoned and we were willing to oppose our own party. We have realized that some people were taking advantage of us to destroy our own party”.
Mr Atenga indicated that President Mahama stood out tall among the other presidential aspirants in the 2012 election and said in view of his track record of affability, eloquence, charisma and humble demeanor, akin to late president Evans Atta Mills, makes him the obvious choice for the people of Ghana, hence the decision to join the wining team.
“We are pledging our unflinching support for the NDC and President John Mahama in the 2012 general elections. We are calling on our fellow disgruntled party members throughout the country who think they can find solace in the NDP to follow us back quickly to the NDC before it is too late.” he added.
Mr Sidii Abubakar Musah, a leading youth activist of the NDC, who welcomed the resigned executives to the NDC, most of who held positions in the NDC before they joined the NDP, told them to take back the positions they relinquished.
He indicated that the NDC had sensed that the NDP, which was a break away party had nothing to offer Ghanaians even though it has consistently and desperately looked for avenues to break the front of the NDC without success.
Mr Musah urged NDC faithfuls to welcome them to the party and remain united in their efforts to campaign to retain the NDC and especially President John Mahama in power.
