Bolgatanga, Sept 1, GNA – Mrs Agnes Atagabe, the Acting Regional Director of Education, on Thursday said students’ enrolment in the sciences in the Upper East Region remained poor.
She said out of 13,134 students who enrolled into the Senior Secondary School in 2008/2009 academic year, only 10% of them offered General Science.
This was contained in an address on the state of science education in the Upper East Region, delivered on her behalf at the 53rd Annual Conference, of the Ghana Association of Science Teachers (GAST) in Bolgatanga.
She said performance at the WASSCE showed that 41 per cent out of 634 students offered biology, 17 per cent out of 883 studied chemistry, 39% of 523 studied physics and 22% out of 1,632 offered elective mathematics.
She blamed this on inadequate teaching personnel and the lack of basic tools and equipment in schools laboratories and workshops resulting in the inefficiency of teachers to deliver their teaching mandate.
She called for a consented effort of parents, teachers and students to improve the situation in the region.
