Dunkwa-On-Offin (C/R), March 30, GNA – The Upper Denkyira District Assembly has spent more than six billion cedis on 34 educational projects in the District.
The projects are mainly new school blocks and teachers’ quarters. Mr Richard Anane Adabor, acting District Chief Executive, announced these at the official inauguration of the Denkyira Progressive Association (DPA) at Dunkwa-On-Offin on Monday.
He said the Assembly had also constructed a library complex, which included a distance learning unit and computer learning centre at Dunkwa at the total cost of 1.6 billion cedis.
The acting DCE said five clinics had also been built at Ntom, Buabin, Agyempoma, Imbraim and Subin to help improve health delivery in these communities.
Mr Adabor said, “We are currently constructing a 36-bed ward at the Dunkwa District Hospital”, adding that some renovation works had been done on the male and female wards of the hospital.
He said the Assembly was spending about 80 per cent of its share of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund on education but expressed regret that some parents were not supporting the education of their children. Mr Adabor said even though there had been modest improvement in the performance of the District in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), there was still room for improvement.
He advised the Association not to turn itself into a witch-hunting group but to support individuals and groups with clear intentions to help push the District forward.
Mr Ben Kofi Ayeh, Member of Parliament (MP) for Upper Denkyira West, appealed to all citizens to help reverse the slogan “Denkyira is retrogressing”.
According to him, the area needed visionary leadership that would change the old order of doing things. “We need leaders of vision and not the old way of doing things”.
The MP challenged the Association to study all government documents, especially the national budget and the President’s State of the Nation Address so that they could access the portions that could help in improving the lot of the people. 30 March 05
