Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, President of the Dominion University has called for an update of Ghana’s educational system to enable students to acquire skills and knowledge that would make them employable after graduation.
He said: “the industrial age of the 16th and 17th centuries should be revisited to enable students work in Ghana’s cocoa, rock and soil processing industries”.
Dr Spio-Garbrah, a former Minister of Education, was addressing students of the University of Ghana as part of the 65th anniversary celebrations of the educational institution.
President of the university in statement copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said a review of the educational system would help students to understand the industrial environment and to be able to seek employment in the various sectors of the economy after the completion of their academic programmes.
Dr Spio-Garbrah also advised that any such revision should include programmes on liberal arts and entrepreneurship.
He said that “relevant courses around the major economic growth poles should be developed for students at the Junior High School and Senior High School levels, so that by the time students enter the universities, they would be well grounded in Ghana’s economy’’.
Dr Spio-Garbrah said in view of the increasing dominance of the private sector and businesses, “it is necessary for the liberal arts student to study subjects such as economics, business, accounting, human resources management, finance and sales marketing at the graduate level to improve the employability rate”.
