UOG appeals for help for Engineering Sciences Faculty

Accra, Jan. 12, GNA – Professor Edward Ofori-Sarpong, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana (UG), on Wednesday appealed for assistance to put up a building for the newly created Faculty of Engineering Sciences.

He said the Faculty would also need about 500,000 pounds sterling for the purchase of equipment and chemicals to enhance research. The Faculty, currently housed in the Chemistry Department, was established in recognition of the current trends towards accelerated scientific and technological development worldwide.

Prof. Ofori-Sarpong was speaking when the Ghana Education Fund (GETFund) presented a 58-seater bus valued at 500 million cedis to the Faculty.

The presentation formed part of Government’s policy to boost the development of education.

Mr Fosuaba Mensah Banahene, GETFund Administrator, said the Fund would provide the University with two additional buses.

He said over the past three years a total of 2.153 trillion cedis had been paid to the Board by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning out of which a little over 70 per cent had been spent on various projects submitted by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.

He said there were more than 600 single projects, mostly constructional, that had been undertaken by various tertiary institutions and the Ministry on behalf of pre-tertiary institutions. Professor Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere, Vice Chancellor, UG, expressed his gratitude for the support from the GETFund and said the University hoped to enhance its human resource capacity to meet current demands.
