Untrained teachers compromise quality education delivery- GNAT

Twelve teachers from all the twelve GNAT districts of the Central Region were awarded in recognition of their hard work and impressive role of educating and transforming the lives of students in the region.

The awardees, including two women, were presented with a citation and a 24-inch LCD television sets each, at this year’s Central Regional World Teachers’ Day celebration in Cape Coast, held under the theme, “Take a stand for teachers”, on Friday.

About 300 teachers from all over the Region attended the ceremony.

The Acting National President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mr. Samuel Doe Alobuia in a speech read on his behalf, bemoaned the high number of untrained teachers in schools across the country saying “this compromises quality education delivery.”

Mr. Alobuia said the theme is a clear call to all stakeholders to honour, celebrate and support teachers in every way possible, to enable them to perform to their optimum, as the nation works towards achieving education for all by 2015.

He also appealed to the Government to strategize to solve the problem of inadequate teachers through access to training opportunities and continued professional development to facilitate quality teaching and learning.

Mr. John Kofi Sam, Acting Regional Chairman of GNAT, underscored the critical role teachers’ play in national development, which he said, could not be underestimated and expressed concern that they are usually not appreciated for their efforts but rather castigated and insulted when students perform poorly.

He called on all stakeholders in the sector to appreciate, support and honour teachers in order to motivate them to give off their best.
