University to start postgraduate programme in mentoring soon

Winneba, July 16, GNA – The University of Education, Winneba, will get assistance from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to start a postgraduate programme in Mentoring to develop supervising teachers and mentors for all schools.

The University therefore expects the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to support the University by making it attractive for experienced teachers to aspire to be mentors.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, said this at the matriculation of 2,894 students for three-month sandwich programmes at the Winneba, Mampong and Kumasi campuses of the university.

Prof Asabere-Ameyaw said 700 students, made up of 504 men and 196 women were admitted to the Winneba Campus to do certificate in Pre-School Education, Diploma in Early childhood Care and Development, Post Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Development and Post Diploma in Basic Education.

“It is important to state that this mentoring system is about supervision and about nurturing a transformational teacher”.

He said teacher mentoring system introduced in the university’s education programme was a key to the improvement of teaching and learning in the schools.

Prof Asabere-Ameyaw said the university also intended to offer programmes aimed at training circuit supervisors in Supervision and Monitoring as well as Mentoring and Evaluation to enable them manage their schedules effectively.

He said teachers should be promoted or appointed to position based on excellent performance using agreed criteria that are based on their abilities and capabilities.
