“UNIVERSITY STILL STANDS BY ORIGINAL POLICY”-REGISTRAR

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has not gone contrary to its original policy of purely science and technology bias institution, Nana Osei Bonsu II, Registrar of the University, who is also the Chief of Asnate Mampong said yesterday.

He was speaking to the “Times” here last Friday on the university’s admissions from 1992 to 1996. Nana Bonsu II said KNUST had never departed from the original idea which prompted the establishment of the university. Explaining further, the Registrar said in 1992/93 out of a total intake of 592 students, 482 were admitted for science and technology and 110 were offered social sciences. In 1993/94 out of a total intake of 2,041, 1,616 were offered science and technology with 425 in social science.

Nana Bonsu said in 1995/96, there were no admissions due to the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) strike action, adding that “as you can ascertain from the figures, the ratio of science and technology students has always exceeded 70 per cent.” The Registrar denied that from the figures shown the University had departed from the mandate of a 70-30 ratio in favour of science and technology courses.

On the issue of liberal arts, Nana Bonsu maintained the College of Art was basically technology-oriented unlike such courses in the Universities of Ghana and Cape Coast which were classified as humanities. Ghanaian Times
