University of Ghana records 124 crime cases in 2012

The University of Ghana, Legon, last year, recorded 124 crime cases on campus, officials have said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Amadu Salifu (Rtd), Head of Security, speaking to the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday, said the Legon security was working hard to counteract crime on campus and that crime was declining gradually.

He said since the commencement of the first quarter of 2013, there had not been any break-ins but there were few thefts.

ACP Salifu said in 2012 the Legon security recorded 26 break-ins in the halls and hostels.

He released other crime statistics as attempted robbery/robery/armed robbery 14, theft by fraud, four, residential break-ins/theft, 13, assault and loitering at halls/hostels, 11.

The others are car break-ins, 26, theft at offices, 13, unlocked doors, two, narcotic cases, one, damage to university property, two, attempted rape, one, Illegal possession of fire-arms, one.

The rest are trespassing onto university land, one, attempted suicide, two, theft on campus of overhead cables and underground electric cables, five.

At the Crime Desk, headed by Paul Adanusa, a Security Officer said the relationship between the Legon Security and the students had been very cordial and that the students had been very co-operating in crime combat and urged them to keep that up.
