The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson Dafiamekpor, has described the sale of admission forms by public universities and colleges as an illegality, for which the universities must stop immediately.
According to him, the high cost of the application forms is deterring brilliant but needy students from being able to access university education.
Mr Dafiamekpor, in a statement on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday June 14, indicated the universities were using the cost of the application forms to extort monies from prospective students, stating that the forms are sold to more applicants that the universities can admit.
He noted that a lot of students have had their hopes of attending university dashed due to the development.
Mr Dafiamekpor, who is also a ranking member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, told Parliament that the charges for admission forms is in breach of the 1992 constitution Article (25)1a and (38)1 as it prevents one from enjoying the right to education.
He, therefore, called on parliament to scrap such fees on admission forms by the public universities as they are all beneficiaries of government subvention.
