Universal Merchant Bank Appoints Daphne Oppong to Lead Human Capital in Bold Brand Revamp

Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) has named Mrs. Daphne Oppong as its new Head of Human Capital, a strategic appointment that underscores the bank’s people-first approach as it embarks on a major brand refresh.

Mrs. Oppong joins UMB at a pivotal moment in its transformation journey, which seeks to redefine how the indigenous financial institution connects with customers, communities, and its own workforce. The bank says the move signals a deeper commitment to fostering a purpose-driven culture rooted in inclusion and innovation.

Announcing the appointment, UMB’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Philip Oti-Mensah, described it as a significant milestone in the bank’s evolution.

“Welcoming Daphne to our leadership team marks an important step forward in our commitment to building a culture that reflects the values of the communities we serve,” he said. “As we continue to refresh and reimagine our brand, our people are at the heart of everything we do.”

Mrs. Oppong brings with her a wealth of experience in human resource management across both the banking and manufacturing sectors. Her background spans emerging and developing markets, with a focus on aligning people strategies with corporate transformation goals.

Her new role will see her leading HR transformation initiatives at UMB, driving employee engagement and organisational performance, and helping to shape a future-ready workplace culture.

“I am honoured to join Universal Merchant Bank at such a transformative time,” Mrs. Oppong said in a statement. “It is a privilege to be part of a team that is not only redefining banking but also honouring an indigenous identity, empowerment, and inclusive growth. I look forward to championing a people-first approach and helping cultivate a workplace that celebrates our shared purpose.”

Mrs. Oppong holds an Executive MBA in Human Resource Management from the Paris Graduate School of Management, a Stanford LEAD Certificate from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, and professional certification from the Human Capital Institute.

Her appointment is the latest in a series of leadership changes at UMB aimed at supporting long-term growth, driving digital innovation, and deepening community engagement.

The bank’s refreshed brand identity, expected to be unveiled in the coming months, will include updates to its visual identity, service delivery, and internal culture, all aligned with its renewed mission and values.
