Unit committees not functioning at Obuasi

Obuasi, (Ash), April 19, GNA – Unit Committee structures in most of the electoral areas in the Obuasi Municipality have collapsed as the members have relinquished their positions or have lost interest in the job. As a result, assembly members have to rely on a few committed ones or at times friends and relatives in the performance of their duties to their electorates.

These revelations came to light, when the Presiding Member of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, Nana Asirifi Asare 11, toured some electoral areas in the municipality.

Among the areas visited were Gausu East, Anyinam, Bidieso, Amangoase, New Nsuta/JJ, Mousi Valley, Anyimadukrom, Boete, Tutuka-Tiatiaso and pompora Treatment Plant (PTP) quarters.

At Gausu East, Mrs Grace Badu told the Presiding Member that, apart from the unit committee chairman, the rest of the committee members had virtually stopped performing any duty and that she now relied on two young men, who were non-members and her husband. At PTP area, one Mr James Frimpong, a resident had volunteered to support and assist Madam Irene Quaye, the assemblywoman in her functions to the people.

Mr Stephen Addai, the assemblyman for Anyimadukrom complained that only five out of the 30-member unit committee operating in the area were active.

At Wawase Junior Staff Central Electoral Area, Mr John Amankwa told the Presiding Member that the unit committee in the area was not functioning.

“I am left with my son and the chairman, Mr Asante, he added. Nana Asirifi Asare, who was accompanied by Mr Eric Opong Agyeman, the Municipal Building Inspector, expressed concern about the situation and commended those, who were not unit committee members but had volunteered to assist to improve conditions in their areas. 19 April 06
