Union official appeals teachers to show restraint

Accra, Jan 14, GNA – Mr. Dan Ayim Antwi, General Secretary of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Wednesday appealed to its members in the Ghana Education Service (GES) to cancel any planned industrial action. He said progress has been made in resolving some of the issues and the Standing Joint Negotiating Committee (SJNC) is to be reconvened on January 28.

A statement signed by Mr Antwi said the SJNC would also start negotiation on the review of the expired Conditions of Service for the Non-Teaching Staff.

He said since the last meeting, SJNC held on December 17, 2003 a lot of progress has been made.

Mr Antwi said a committee that was set up by the GES to collate information on salary distortions/disparities has completed its work and submitted its report to the GES.

“In view of the progress made so far by Management and Union towards amicable resolution of the grievances, we wish to appeal to you to exercise restraint.”
