Union congratulates Minister

Accra, Feb. 15, GNA – The Local Government Workers Union (LGWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has congratulated Mr Charles Bintim for his appointment as the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development.

A letter signed by Mr William Mensah, General Secretary of the LGWU, to the Minister said: “We are confident that you will relentlessly continue with the efforts at making the Local Government Service and the decentralisation concept a reality”.

While assuring Mr Bintim of its co-operation and support, the LGWU said it believed he had the disposition for the high office and with his dynamism any existing challenges would be addressed. Meanwhile, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Mensah has cautioned LGWU members working within the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to co-operate in making hawking on the pavements impossible.

He said they should be vigilant against any temptations, which might come their way through monetary influence or pressure from well to-do traders in an attempt to thwart the efforts of the AMA. Mr Mensah said the LGWU was supporting AMA’s action as well as similar moves by other Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies in the regions in view of the advantages that go with ejection. These include high hygienic status and the potential for revenue generation through tourism, which could only happen in a congenial and decent condition. 15 Feb. 05
