Unilever equips schools in Tema with computers

Tema, March 10, GNA – Unilever Ghana Limited (UGL) on Thursday presented 24 used computers valued at 48 million cedis to nine first and second cycle schools in the Tema municipality to enable the children get abreast with the computer age.

Making the presentation, Mrs Vicky Wireko Andoh, Corporate Relations Manager of the UGL said the gesture, which is part of the company’s social responsibility is aimed at preparing the children for the job market in future, since computer literacy is crucial for securing a job today.

Ghana’s children cannot afford to be left behind in the era of the Information Communication Technology, she said, and called on all to assist in acquiring some computers for the schools.

She said in living up to its expectation, the UGL through its Unilever Ghana Foundation has within five years, spent over three billion cedis as scholarships for 230 students in the senior secondary schools, Under/Post graduates and pledged to do more in the area of education.

The Corporate Relations Manager said the UGL has contributed immensely towards the growth of all sectors of the economy and recalled that last year some management staff used their lunch hours to teach in some primary schools at Tema Manhean.

Mr Eugene Zongo Narh, Assistant Director of Education in charge of Human Resource and Development received the computers on behalf of the beneficiary schools and urged them to handle them with care to enable other students to benefit from the facilities.

The beneficiary schools are the Methodist, Anglican, Presbyterian primaries and JSS at Tema Manhean, Ashaiman JSS and Primary, Tema Parents Association, Tema Secondary and Chemu Secondary schools.
