Unemployed nurses and midwives to picket at Flagstaff House

The Ghana Nurses and Midwife Trainees Association (GNMTA) says it will picket at the Flagstaff House on Monday 19TH October to demand answers on why government has consistently refused to post them to health facilities two years after they graduated from school.

According to the group, it has chosen to picket at the seat of government because the sector Ministry (Ministry of Health) and other relevant institutions have failed to explain the delay in their postings.

They are hopeful that their going to the President’s office will cause him to find a solution to the unemployment.

Over 6,000 students have still not been posted since they graduated from school in 2014, a situation that has created a lot of financial difficulties for them as they are left with no option than resort to going in for loans at high-interest rates while others have become a burden on their relatives as they have become dependent on them.

Speaking to Kasapa News, National President of the Association, Emmanuel Geyevo, said several petitions have been sent to the Ministry of Health for redress; but, that has been in futile.

“For the past two years after our national services, we have not been posted to any hospital to work. We felt very uncomfortable about this situation, it is really frustrating us. They claim government don’t have money so we should relax, we have had a lot of promises which have gone unfulfilled. We’ll not relent in adopting whichever means possible to get us posted” he said.
