Unemployed jailed for stealing

Nsuta (Ash), April 21, GNA – An Nsuta circuit court last Friday sentenced a 28-year-old unemployed, Kwasi Gyamfi to five years imprisonment with hard labour for unlawful entry and stealing. He pleaded guilty.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Solomon Etrew told the court presided over by Mr P.U. Dery, that on the night of March 30, this year, the accused, who stays at Bompata in Kumasi, came to Jamasi, his hometown and sneaked into the room of Miss Mary Afram, a petty trader, who because of the hot weather chose to sleep outside without locking her door.

He said Gyamfi took away a Sonny Erricson camera mobile phone, a CD tape recorder, a pair of tennis shoes, three wristwatches and cash of 380,000 cedis, all totalling 3.5 million cedis and bolted to Kumasi. Inspector Etrew said a report was made to the police and while investigations were going on, some concerned citizens of Jamasi arrested the accused on April 9 and handed him over to the police. Gyamfi later led the police to Kumasi zongo, where the tape recorder and a wristwatch were retrieved.

The same court again slapped the accused, who the police described as a hardened criminal, with another five-year prison term, when he pleaded guilty to similar offences.

The sentences are to run concurrently.

The prosecutor said on April 5, this year, Gyamfi sneaked into the room of Miss Mary Serwaa Agyemang, a teacher, and made away with some of her personal effects and cash of 300,000 cedis, all totalling 2.8 million cedis.
