Unemployed jailed for stealing

Asamankese, Oct 15, GNA – Tettey Addo, a 25-year-old unemployed who stole personal effects of two neighbours has been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment with hard labour by a circuit court at Asamankese. Addo, who pleaded guilty, was charged with five counts of causing unlawful damage, unlawful entry and stealing.

Detective Inspector Osei Owusu, told the court, presided over by Mr S.S Appiah, that the complainants, Madam Grace Boku, teacher, Mr Kwadwo Asiamah, trader and Addo lived in the same area at Suhum. He said on August 15, Grace returned home from school to detect that someone had broken into her room and made away with her sound system valued at 300,000 cedis.

All efforts made to trace the item proved futile, but on September 30, Mr Asiamah returned home from work around 12 noon to discover that his door had been forced open and personal effects including a mobile phone, video deck, and an amplifier all costing 4.985 million cedis had been stolen.

The prosecution said Asiamah suspected Addo and on October 8, he invited him for questioning but when the accused vehemently denied the offence, Asiamah escorted him to his room and conducted a search. The search revealed all the stolen items including Grace’s sound system and he was arrested and handed over to the police. In his caution statement, Addo admitted stealing the items using a metal to force the door open.
