Unemployed jailed for abandoning baby

Aflao, Feb. 15, GNA – Faustina Kwaku, 25, unemployed, was last Friday convicted on her own plea by an Aflao Circuit Court for abandoning her three-week old baby boy.

The court, presided over by Mr Godwin Kwasi-Kumah, however, deferred sentence to February 26, this year.

The accused told the court that she was compelled by acute financial problems and lack of abode for herself and the baby to take that action. Prosecuting Sergeant Mary Assan of Aflao Police told the court that the accused, on January 21, this year travelled from Nigeria to Aflao in search of her sister whom she did not find.

She said Faustina continued to live in Aflao with her baby whom she abandoned in the Aflao market where a complainant found him at about 10 pm on January 27, this year and sent the baby boy to the police station when she could not trace the mother.

According to the prosecution on February 10, this year, Faustina lodged a compliant with the police about her missing baby and was taken to the Aflao District Hospital where she identified the child.

Sergeant Assan said after Police investigations, the accused person was charged with the offence.
