Unemployed jailed five years for stealing and attempting to escape from detention

An unemployed man who stole a television and attempted escaping from lawful custody has been sentenced to five years imprisonment.

Mohammed Amidu, 20, when appeared before the Akim Swedru Circuit Court pleaded guilty to abetment of crime and unlawful entry and would serve a four years jail term and one more for escaping from lawful custody.

Samson Djabanor, an accomplice is on the run.

Police Inspector Sabian Sallah told the court presided over by Mr Yaw Atta Sampong that a caretaker of one Mr Herbert Dankwa’s house is the complainant.

Inspector Sallah said on January 7, early this year at about 1700 hours the complainant returned home from town and detected that someone had broken into Mr Dankwa’s room and had stolen a 32 inches LCD television worth 1,000 Ghana cedis and some belongings.

The prosecutor said a witness in the case, a driver whom Amidu and Djabanor kept the TV with, handed the set over to the Police and during investigations Amidu was arrested at Akim Oda Old Town on the same day.

The Inspector said during the course of the interrogation at the Akim Oda CID office, Amidu who was handcuffed jumped through a window of the storey building apparently to escape detention but was soon arrested.
