Unemployed jailed 30 months for indecent assault

A 20-year old unemployed, Sulley Sumaila, was on Wednesday sentenced to 30 months imprisonment by an Accra circuit court for indecent assault.

Sumaila, who was held for inserting his fingers into the vagina of a three-year old girl, pleaded guilty.

Two persons: Ibrahim Samudeem, the victim’s father and Tahiru Abubakar Sadick, who assaulted Sumaila in the bid to arrest him and, thereby, causing damage to a door, have also been sentenced to a fine of GH¢ 60 each or in default go to jail for 12 months.

This was after the court, presided over by Ms Sedina Agbemava, found Samudeem and Sadick guilty on the charge of causing unlawful damage.

The court, however, found them not guilty on the charge of conspiracy and assault.

Prosecuting, Detective Inspector Kofi Atimbire told the court that Madam Rahinatu Yussif, the complainant, is the grandmother of the victim. Both victim and the complainant reside at Nima.

Prosecution said Sumaila lived with his aunty in a house at Nima together with Samudeem and Sadick.

On June 30, last year, in the morning, Madam Rahinatu went for jogging leaving the victim and her mother in a room. Later the victim’s mother left her for work.

According to prosecution, the victim went into the room of Sumaila and while in the room, he (Sumaila) inserted his fingers into the victim’s vagina.

Prosecution said when the complainant returned the victim narrated her ordeal to her and a report was made to the police.

In their bid to arrest Sumaila and escort him to the police, Samudeem and Sadick broke into a room of Sumaila and subjected him to severe beatings after causing damage to a door.

Sumaila, in the process, lost his teeth and had a cut on his upper lip.

When Sumaila was escorted to the Nima Police Station, he was issued with a medical form as a result of the severe beatings.

According to the prosecutor the victim was also issued with a medical form to attend hospital so she could be examined and treated.
