Unemployed Health Professionals Threaten Nationwide Protest Over Years of Neglect

A coalition of Ghana’s unemployed allied health professionals has issued a stern warning to the government, threatening a nationwide demonstration if their demands for employment are not addressed promptly.

The Coalition of Unemployed Allied Health Professionals (COUAHP), speaking at a press conference in Kumasi on Monday, expressed frustration over years of waiting for official posting after completing their studies and required national service. According to the group, many of its members have remained jobless since 2019, despite graduating from accredited institutions and fulfilling all obligations expected of them.

Hussein Abdul Baaki, the Public Relations Officer of the Coalition, conveyed the growing desperation among members, citing worsening financial, emotional, and psychological conditions.

“We’ve done our part, graduated, completed our national service, and submitted all the necessary documentation. Yet, we remain at home, unemployed. If our voices continue to be ignored, we will take to the streets to demand what is rightfully ours,” Mr Baaki said.

The group has submitted multiple petitions to relevant authorities over the years, including the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance, but claim they have received little or no feedback, an act they interpret as a sign of systemic neglect.

They argue that the continued unemployment of trained health professionals poses a broader threat to public health and social stability.

“This is not just about us,” Mr Baaki stated. “This is about the country’s healthcare system and the future of allied health professions in Ghana. Continued inaction is unacceptable.”

The Coalition also took issue with a recent comment made by Thomas Anabah, Member of Parliament for Garu and a medical doctor, who they allege dismissed the legitimacy of their concerns.

“We are deeply disappointed by Honourable Anabah’s remarks. As a fellow health professional, he should understand our plight. We call on him to retract his statement and offer a public apology,” Mr Baaki added.

The Coalition is urging the government to expedite the clearance and posting of all qualified health professionals, emphasizing that their appeal is not merely a request, but a call for dignity, fairness, and recognition of their role in the healthcare sector.

The Ministry of Health has yet to respond to the group’s latest demands.
