UN to establish Information Management Library in Ghana

Accra, Sept. 28, GNA – The United Nations (UN) is determined to establish an Information Management Library in Ghana to promote programmes and projects of UN systems.

Ms Ruby Sandhu-Rajon, United Nations Resident Coordinator, who announced this said, in the past, the UN acquired land at Ghana House for that purpose but that could not materialized because the project was abandoned.

She was speaking during a courtesy call on Mr John Tia Akologu, Minister of Information in Accra on Wednesday.

Ms Sandhu–Rajon explained that the visit was to partner the Ministry to collaborate with the media to champion United Nations programmes in the country.

“We have recognised the incredible role of the media in reaching out to the people and therefore decided to work with them to champion our programmes, especially the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and other developmental projects,” she added.

Ms Sandhu–Rajon commended Ghana for her efforts in achieving the MDGs by 2015.

Mr Akologu said there is a space within the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Information Services Department (ISD) which the UN could use for its Information Management Library.

He commended Ms Sandhu–Rajon for her bold steps in recognising the Ministry as a partner in development.

“That recognition debunks the notion that the Ministry is government propaganda machinery,” he added.

Mr Akologu commended the UN for assisting Ghana in Information Communication Technology, capacity building programmes and eradicating Guinea worm in Ghana.

He said there was the need to make a paradigm shift and focus more on developmental and social issues.
