Accra, May 16, GNA – The Force Commander of United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MOUNC) has lauded Ghanaian troops and the Government for their efforts to ensure peace at DR Congo.
A statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces in Accra on Tuesday said Lt. Gen. Gaye Babacar made the commendation when he addressed the troops and other military observers at the Medals Presentation Parade of GHANBATT 9 in DR Congo.
Lt. Gen. Gaye said the UN would continue to rely on Ghana as one of its major troop contributing nations because of the professionalism, dedication and commitment of its soldiers to duties in war-torn countries.
He recounted Ghana’s participation in the UN Peacekeeping Operation in the then Congo Republic (ONUC) some 45 years ago saying there was nothing as rewarding as being recognised for helping another country to overcome its problems.
The Ghanaian contingent Commander, Brigadier-General Carl Modey, who is also Commander of MONUC Western Brigade, and Lt Colonel Francis Ofori, received special commendations from the Force Commander for exhibiting efficiency and professionalism in the mission area. A delegation led by Mr William Ofori Boafo, Deputy Minister of Defence, represented the Ministry at the parade. The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Ghana’s Ambassador to DR Congo, Mr Iddrisu Biriya as well as the UN Secretary General’s Representative, Mr William Swing. At an All Ranks Durbar, the statement said, Mr Ofori Boafo entreated the troops to remain focused, disciplined and abide by UN Regulations in order to continue to uphold the good name earned by the Ghana Armed Forces.
He attributed the success of the peacekeepers to the total effort of individuals and collective enthusiasm and initiatives by the troops.
