UK students present computers to Akodzo JHS

Tema, July 16, GNA- A delegation of students and teachers from Rossington All Saints College in Doncaster, UK has donated accessories for a computer laboratory to the Akodzo Junior High School, their partner school in Tema.

The delegation provided 11 HP laptop computers with internet connectivity, 32 inches flat screen television, DVD player, video camera, printer as well as teaching and learning materials worth over 5,000 pounds to the school.

The delegation which comprised of ten students, four teachers and one headmaster is in the country for an exchange programme under the ‘Dreams and Teams’ partnership, sponsored by the British Council, to learn Ghanaian cultural practices and how schools in Ghana inculcate cultural elements in the training of students. Mr David Rowsell, Headteacher of the Rossington All Saints College on Tuesday said every student must receive training in Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) to prepare them for the job market in future.

Mr Rowsell further said the partnership was not about supporting their partner school but rather, learning the different cultures of the two countries as well as being good neighbours to each other. Mrs Victoria Opoku, Tema Metropolitan Educational Director who commissioned the laboratory accessories thanked the delegation for their support, noting that, the items would help in the effective implementation of the new educational reform. Mrs Opoku explained that even though ICT training has been included in the educational reform, most of the schools in the country lacked computers and electricity.

Mrs Florida Dwamena Akoto, Head teacher of Akodzo JHS thanked the British Council for initiating the partnership and expressed optimism that the partnership would grow to include other schools in the metropolis.

She promised to maintain the items and ensure that students and teachers in the metropolis derived the full benefits of its installation.
