Ugandan delegation calls on Central Regional Minister

Cape Coast, July 27, GNA – A nine-member delegation from the Ugandan Local Government Ministry, on Tuesday called on the Central Regional Minister, Mrs. Ama Benyiwa-Doe in Cape Coast.

The leader of the delegation, Mr. Otekat John Emilly, a Ugandan Member of Parliament, said the group was in the country to learn about Ghana’s district assembly concept.

Mr. Emilly said Uganda had followed with keen interest Ghana’s local government system since its establishment in 1992 and the delegation would consider the Region as case study.

Ms. Benyiwa-Doe gave a brief history of the rich culture of ancient Cape Coast, investment opportunities and the numerous tourists’ sites in the Region.

She briefed the delegation on how the local government system operates in the country and explained the differences between districts, metropolitan and municipal assemblies.

Ms. Benyiwa-Doe said that the Region has 17 administrative districts and 19 political constituencies.

She explained to the group that the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) serves as a link between assemblies and the Executive arm of government.

Ms. Benyiwa-Doe said that the quality of life of the people is also coordinated, monitored and evaluated by the RCC with subvention from Central Government adding that the RCC had no powers to make laws on its own.

He said the Region is the “tourism heart beat” of the country.

The delegation would interact with Ghana’s Minister of Local Government and Rural Development.
