UG toll booth saga: We’re not in the jungle – Tarzan tells Gbevlo

The Chief Policy Analyst at the Ghana Institute for Public Policy Options (GIPPO), Dr Charles Wereko-Brobbey says President John Mahama must immediately sack his national security Coordinator for sanctioning the demolition of a toll booth at the University of Ghana.

He said the President must sack Larry Gbevlo Lartey for taking the law into his own hands and using brute force to undertake an exercise for which he has absolutely no legal standing.

According to Dr Wereko-Brobbey, failure by the President to immediately sack Gbevlo Lartey will be an indictment of himself.

“If the president doesn’t fire him, then it means he ordered him to do what he did”.

He said the President “must show the people of Ghana that he has not lost control” and did not bless “this act of barbarism and hooliganism”.

The former Volta River Authority Chief Executive said: “We don’t operate by jungle laws anymore, adding that: “He has no business doing this under civilian rule”.

“Gbevlo is a Lawyer so what did he study the rule of law for?”

“If we are not careful, dictatorship will come back into this country through the back door”, Dr. Wereko Brobbey warned on Asempa FM on Tuesday.

The booth, which is at the entrance to the University at Okponglo, was pulled down by national security officials at about 1:30am Tuesday.

Gbevlo Lartey justified the destruction of the booth with reason that it was wrongly sited and also caused congestion.

Meanwhile, the University of Ghana says it is disappointed with the National Security Coordinator for going about the whole exercise without courtesy. The University says it will meet on the matter on Wednesday.
