UG students lay bare voter-registration frustrations

Students Representative Council of the University of Ghana is calling on the Electoral Commission to ensure that all eligible students are given the opportunity to register.

This follows concerns by many eligible students eager to get their names on the voters’ roll may be disenfranchised as a result of challenges with the limited voter registration exercise on campus.

The SRC says the Electoral Commission must take the needed steps to increase the number of registration centres and equipment, to be able to capture the large student population and that of other constituents.

Meanwhile, there are reports that the EC only mounted one registration centre at the Legon campus to cater for the over three thousand students estimated to be partaking in this exercise. Some stakeholders are calling on the EC to extend the exercise which ends May 8, in order not to disenfranchise legitimate registrants.
