Winneba (C/R), Aug. 14, GNA – The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), will from next month start a Ghanaian language Campus at Ajumako in the Central Region with 199 fresh students.
This follows the handing over of the former Institute of Ghanaian Languages to the University by the Ministry of Education upon request to help train more teachers.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, announced this when he and management of the UEW inspected the facility at Ajumako on Friday.
He said the students made up of 128 males and 71 females from the Department of Akan-Nzema offering courses in Fante Education, BA (Nzema Education) and BA (Twi Education) would be sent to the Ajumako Campus in September.
Professor Asabere-Ameyaw explained that “the core business of the University was to train teachers who will eventually work as agents of change in the communities they are posted to”.
He made a passionate appeal to the chiefs and people of Ajumako-Eyan-Essiam District to warmly welcome the students and endeavour to live in peace and harmony with them at all times.
Professor Asabere-Ameyaw stressed that the environment on campus provided excellent and conducive atmosphere for academic work.
“The presence of the University will help improve economic activities and also contribute to the accelerated development of the district by way of providing employment for the local citizenry,” he said.
He appealed to investors, especially estate developers to help put up hostel facilities at Ajumako and its surrounding communities.
Accompanying the Vice-Chancellor were the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mawutor Avoke, the Finance Officer, Mr. Benjamin K. Kpodo, Acting Internal Auditor, Ms. Sena Dake, Registrar, Mr. C.Y. Akwaa-Mensah, Director of Works and Physical Development, Mr. Fiifi Yankson and Mr. Francis N. Akronu, Deputy Registrar, Division of Human Resources.
The Institute of Ghanaian Languages at Ajumako was among seven diploma colleges that were brought together to form the University in 1992.
Since then, the place was being used as a training centre by the Ministry of Education.
