UDS, University of the 21st Century- Fawundu

Nyankpala (N/R), May 28, GNA- The University for Development Studies in Tamale has been described as “University of the 21st Century” in view of its location between the Sahelian region and the forest belt. This is also so due to the University’s multi-campus nature, as well as its aspirations and studies that cut across the spectrum of all academic disciplines.

A statement signed by the Assistant Registrar, University Relations, Mr George Debrie, said Mr Alfred Salia Fawundu, UNDP Resident Representative in Ghana made this observation during an interaction with students of the UDS at the Nyankpala campus near Tamale last Thursday. The statement said Mr Fawundu described the location of the University as “a fertile ground for any research in environmental management and preservation of natural resources”

It quoted the UNDP Resident Representative as lauding the UDS for training students “to be sensitive to the dimensions of human welfare” and noted that: “Development begins and ends with human beings”. The statement said the UDS was determined to be a bilingual university, another feature that would add to its uniqueness.

It said Mr Fawundu, who spoke in both English and French, emphasized the necessity and advantage of the ability to communicate in two or more international languages and advised the students “to learn how to learn for life”.

He earlier held discussions on the development of the University with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Kaburise and the UDS Management Team, the statement said. 28 May 04
