UDS campus calls for the establishment of French Library

Wa, May 14, GNA – Authorities of the Wa campus of the University for=

Development Studies (UDS) have called for the establishment of a French library to improve on the teaching and learning of the French Language in=

the University.

Dr. Sylvester Z. Galaa, Head of the Department of Social, Political and Historical Studies, said this when a delegation from the French Embassy a= nd the Ministry of Education paid a visit to the University on Wednesday. Dr. Galaa said the French Language Centre at the university lacked materials.

The team of visitors included Mr. Arnaud Dornon, Head of Cooperation= at the French Embassy in Ghana, Mrs. Isabelle Bokhari, Linguistic Attach=E9 to the Embassy and Mrs Louis Gminguole, Coordinator, Secretariat for Francophone Affairs at the Ministry of Education. Mr. Dornon appealed to the authorities of the University to come out=

with policies regarding the teaching and learning of the language that wo= uld attract support from other Francophone countries. He commended the University for introducing and giving the opportuni= ty to every student to learn the language, adding that it would offer them vital opportunities in this era of globalization.

Mr. Dornon pledged the French Embassy’s commitment to support and al= so link the University to other international organisations interested in th= e development of the French language in non French speaking countries for support. Mr. Halidu Musah, Coordinator of the French Language Programme in th= e University, said the programme was introduced in November 2006 to encoura= ge students to come out as bilingual graduates and it would make them more competitive in the job market.

He said it was also to help build the capacity of the Lecturers to b= e able to deliver lectures both in English and in French to both Francophon= e and Anglophone Universities. Professor Abraham Berinyuu, Dean, Faculty of Integrated Development Studies, appealed to the French Embassy in Ghana to support the Universit= y by sending some the students to the Francophone countries to undertake th= eir industrial attachment.
